What is the Coach?
Coach is a personalized AI nutrition assistant built directly into the MyFitnessPal app. Think of it as having a knowledgeable nutrition guide available any time of day, one that actually knows your logged data. Nutrition Coach can help you figure out what to eat with your remaining calories, check in on how you're doing against your goals, find recipes, and answer your nutrition questions, all based on what you've actually logged.
Coach is not a generic chatbot. Every response is grounded in your real diary data, macro targets, and food history, so the guidance you get is relevant to you, not a one-size-fits-all answer.
The more you use Coach, the better we can make it. We aim to keep building toward a coaching experience that works the way you do.
Where do I find Coach in the app?
Coach lives in the bottom navigation bar of the app. Look for the Coach tab at the bottom right and tap it to open your coaching experience.
Note about the More menu: You may notice that the More menu is no longer in the bottom navigation bar where it used to be; It has moved to the Today tab. Look for the profile icon in the top right corner of that screen, which shows a silhouette of a person. Tap that to find all the same options you're used to.
Who has access to Coach?
Coach is currently available to Premium and Premium+ MyFitnessPal members on iOS, in English, across the following countries: the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
If you have an active subscription and don't see the Coach tab in your navigation bar, we're still in the process of rolling it out and hope to have it available to you soon.
How does Coach work?
When you open Coach, you'll see a few suggested questions to help you get started, things like "Am I on track with my goals today?" or "What should I eat right now?" You can tap one of these to kick off a conversation, or type your own question.
After Coach responds, you'll also see a few suggested follow-up questions at the bottom of the screen. Tap one to send it instantly, or keep typing your own questions.
Coach may use the following information to answer your questions:
- Your food diary: today's meals and the last couple weeks of history.
- Your nutrition goals: daily calorie and macro targets (protein, fat, carbs)
- Your personal meals and recipes: meals and recipes you've saved in the app
- The MFP food database: nutritional info on millions of foods
- MFP recipes: searchable by diet, cuisine, cook time, allergies, and more
- Your step data: daily step counts and weekly totals
Coach uses this data as updated, so answers reflect where you actually stand today.
What can Coach help me with?
Here are some of the most common things Coach is great at:
Checking in on your day: "Am I on track with my goals today?", "How am I doing on protein?", "What should I eat with my remaining calories?"
Making real-world food decisions: "What should I order at Chipotle?", "What's a good on-the-go protein snack?", "What should I look for on a restaurant menu?"
Planning ahead: "Help me plan meals for tomorrow", "What should I eat before or after a workout?", "What are easy high-protein breakfasts?"
Understanding your nutrition: "Why is protein so important?", "Why am I hungry even when I hit my calories?", "What does hitting my fat goal actually do?"
Reviewing your progress: "What's been my biggest nutrition win this week?", "How does this week compare to last week?"
What can Coach not do?
There are a few things Coach can't do. Here's what to know:
- Coach cannot log food for you. If the Coach suggests a meal or food, you'll still need to add it to your diary yourself. You can do that quickly using the Diary, barcode scanner, Meal Scan, or Voice logging.
- Coach cannot edit your goals. To change your calorie or macro targets, head to the Goals section in your settings.
- Coach cannot access your weight history (yet). If you have questions about your weight trends, check the Progress tab.
- Coach is focused on nutrition and MFP. It won't help with questions unrelated to food, nutrition, health, or the MyFitnessPal app.
How do I get the best results from Coach?
A few tips for getting the most helpful responses:
Be specific. The more context you give, the better the answer. Instead of "What should I eat?", try "I have 400 calories left and I'm 20g short on protein. What's a good dinner?"
Ask follow-up questions. Coach remembers the context of your conversation, so you can keep going back and forth. Use the suggested chips at the bottom or type your own follow-ups.
Use it throughout the day. Coach is most useful in the moment: checking in before a meal, after you log lunch, or when you're trying to decide what to order. The suggested questions are tailored to common real-time decisions.
Start a fresh conversation when you want a clean slate. Coach saves your conversation when you leave and come back. If you want to start over, tap the pencil icon in the top right corner of the Coach screen to begin a new conversation.
Keep using it and tell us what you think. Coach is designed to get better over time, and the best way to make that happen is through real conversations with you. The more you interact with it, the more we learn about what's most helpful. If something works well or falls short, we want to know. Your experience directly shapes where Coach goes next.
Is Coach's advice safe to follow?
Coach is designed to give guidance that aligns with evidence-based nutrition principles (USDA Dietary Guidelines, NIH, CDC, and similar sources). But please keep in mind that the answers Coach provides are AI-generated, as with all AI tools, watch out for mistakes. And of course, any answers Coach provides are for general information.
Coach does not provide medical advice and is not intended for use in the diagnosis, cure mitigation, treatment or prevention of diseases or medical conditions. Always consult with your healthcare provider.
What if Coach doesn't know something?
Sometimes Coach may not have access to the information needed to answer your question (for example, your saved recipes or weight history). In those cases, it'll let you know and suggest where in the app you can find what you're looking for.
If Coach gives you an answer that doesn't seem right, you can always ask a follow-up for more detail or clarification.
How do I start a new conversation?
Your conversation with Coach is saved between sessions so you can pick up where you left off. When you're ready for a fresh start, tap the pencil icon in the top right corner of the Coach screen.
