This article explains how to decide if you should turn on the negative calorie adjustment setting in MyFitnessPal. This feature lets the app lower your calorie goal if your tracker shows you burned fewer calories than expected. It also includes instructions for enabling the setting on the website.
Turning on negative-calorie adjustment with your total daily calorie partner helps you get the most accurate count of how many calories you use each day. A negative adjustment means you used fewer calories than MyFitnessPal originally estimated for that day.
You should turn on negative adjustments if any of the following apply:
- You plan to wear your tracking device regularly.
- You want the most accurate calorie feedback that MyFitnessPal can give.
- Your device can sync its data several times throughout the day.
You may want to turn off negative adjustments if any of these apply:
- You do not plan to wear your device regularly.
- You do not want your calorie adjustment to become negative, which would reduce your calories to eat.
- You only want to use the device to motivate yourself by earning extra calories.
To enable the negative calorie adjustment setting:

- Log in to the MyFitnessPal website using the same email address and password you use to access the app.
- Click on the Settings tab near the top of the screen, then click Diary Settings.
- Check the box for Enable Negative Adjustments, then click Save Changes.
