This article explains what to do when the serving size you need to log isn't available for a food.
Not every food comes in the serving size you actually ate, and that's alright. A few small adjustments get you to an accurate log every time.
Serving size choices are limited to the options entered when the food item was created. If our team created the entry, you may see multiple options. If another user added it, there's often just one.
Below are a few ways to work around a missing serving size, whether or not automatic conversion is available to you.
- Adjust the number of servings instead of the serving size. If the serving size is 1 cup and you had 3/4 of a cup, enter 0.75 as the number of servings. Some app versions accept both fractions and decimals.
- Look for the single-unit option. An item created with a 10-ounce serving will often also offer a 1-ounce serving, which you can use as a multiplier with the number of servings.
- Check other search results for the same food. Another entry may already use the unit you're looking for, like ounces instead of grams.
- If you're constantly adjusting the same item, save it as a remembered meal so you don't have to redo the math each time.
- If none of the above work, create a new food item with the exact portion size you need.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter fractions instead of decimals for number of servings?
Some app versions support fractions directly. If yours doesn't, use the decimal equivalent instead.
If I save an adjusted item as a meal, will it remember my custom serving?
Yes. Saving it as a remembered meal locks in the adjusted amount for next time.
Can I change my default unit of measurement app-wide?
Yes, you can change your preferred units of measure for weight, height, distance, and energy. See our article on changing your preferred units of measure.
