Is MyFitnessPal free to use?
Yes! The standard features of MyFitnessPal are free to use, and creating a basic account is free.
The MyFitnessPal app is available to download for free on iOS and Android. We also have our main website at www.myfitnesspal.com. When you use the same log in information across platforms, and you have a valid internet connection, the accounts will sync automatically.
We also offer an upgrade to MyFitnessPal Premium that adds additional features for those who want even more control over their options. The option to upgrade appears in a handful of places on our site and in our apps. In our mobile apps, the upgrade cost is processed as an in-app purchase. On the website, you'll see the MyFitnessPal logo at the top of the payment screen.

Create Your Own Foods, Meals, and Recipes
Foods:
- The "My Foods" list displays foods that you have added to the food database. If locally produced, homemade, or unusual foods are not already in our database, you can add them yourself to make MyFitnessPal's database more complete.
- MyFitnessPal will automatically add your "Frequent" or "Recent" food items to those lists in your diary, for easy reference. However, if you would like to build your own custom list, we suggest using the "My Meals" feature.
- For spacing purposes, those using MyFitnessPal in languages other than English may find the contents of the Recent, Frequent, and My Foods tabs combined in a single tab labeled "Recent" or "Food".
Meals:
- Open the app and tap on More >> tap My Meals, Recipes & Foods >> select Meals tab >> tap "Create a Meal" >> then add Meal name, photo (optional), directions (optional), and food items >> when finished, make sure to hit the Save button on the top right.
Recipes:
(There are two ways to add recipes in our Mobile apps)
From the Diary:
- Go into your diary and Add Food
- Select the Recipes tab then click on the + (top right)
- Select Create a Recipe then Enter Ingredients Manually or Add From Web
- If you choose to use Add From the Web you'll need the URL for the recipe (ex. https://www.myfitnesspal.com/)
- Enter the recipe Name and number of servings**
- If you choose Bulk Import, put in the list of ingredients and the system will choose the best match. You will be able to check update these later
- Select Add Ingredients (type in the search field)
- You will not be able to use items from your recent/frequent/my foods list
- Select Next then review your recipe and Save
From Recipes, Meals & Foods:
- Open the Menu or More...
- Select Recipes, Meals & Foods or My Meals, Recipes & Foods
- Make sure you are on the Recipe tab then select Create a Recipe
- Then Enter Ingredients Manually or Add from Web
- If you choose to use Add From the Web you'll need the URL for the recipe (ex. https://www.myfitnesspal.com/)

** If you're not sure how many servings a recipe will produce, enter a best-guess number when you first create the recipe.
After the recipe is cooked, you can evaluate the number of servings that have been produced. Then, the recipe can be edited and the correct number of servings can be entered. This article contains additional information on editing recipes.
Ability to View Macronutrients
From the food database:
- When searching foods in the database and tapping on a food item itself, you can:
- View the macronutrient and micronutrient values of that particular item.
-
- View the macronutrients (Carbs, Fats, Protein) values in grams and percentages.
- View the macronutrients (Carbs, Fats, Protein) values in grams and percentages.
- From the Nutrition page:
- Open the app and tab on the More button at the bottom of your screen >> select Nutrition >> tap into the Nutrients tab or the Macros tab. You can also adjust the time frame you’d like to view (Daily, Weekly, or Change Date).
- The Nutrients tab will show the total amount consumed, as well as your goal, and how much left you have to consume until that goal is reached within the selected time frame.
- The Macros tab will show your macronutrients in a pie chart graphic (in Day View only). The pie chart will always add up to 100%, to show the relative amounts of calories from fat, carbs, and protein you have eaten. It will not reflect how much of a macronutrient you still need to consume to meet your calorie goals. Keep in mind that carbs and protein have 4 calories per gram and fats have 9 calories per gram. This ratio is important when calculating the percentage: (macro grams x calories per gram) / total calories.
- Open the app and tab on the More button at the bottom of your screen >> select Nutrition >> tap into the Nutrients tab or the Macros tab. You can also adjust the time frame you’d like to view (Daily, Weekly, or Change Date).
Ability to Customize Calorie Goal and Macronutrient Goals by Percentage
MyFitnessPal distributes fat, carb and protein calories based on a percentage, in five percent increments. If you customize your macronutrient goals, all three goals will adjust to total 100%. To adjust your goals:
- Go to your app and click on More >> tap "Goals" >> tap "Calories, Carbs, Protein & Fat Goals" >> adjust your goals as desired (they will need to add up to 100%) and then tap on the "✓" to save your changes.
Ability to Share and View Your Diary with Others

Diary Sharing:

- In the Menu (or "More" page) tap "Settings" then "Privacy Center" >> tap on “Sharing & Privacy Settings” >> click on "Diary Sharing." and then select your preference from "Public," "Friends Only", or "Locked with a key" and save your changes.
On the Web:

A small number of App Gallery partners may require the installation of additional software to upload data from their hardware devices to their online services.
