This article explains the difference between Health Connect and Google Health, walks you through linking each one to MyFitnessPal, and explains why you can only link one of them at a time.
Your steps, workouts, and sleep tell a big part of your health story. Food tells the rest.
Linking a health app to MyFitnessPal brings it all together, so you can see how what you eat fits with how you move.
Google Health (Fitbit) and Health Connect sound alike, but they work differently. Here's how to choose the one that fits you best.
Understanding the differences
- Google Health (Fitbit) is Google's health and fitness app. It replaced the Fitbit app on May 19, 2026, and it uses your Google Account. If you use a Fitbit device, your activity now lives in Google Health. Google is also moving Google Fit users over to Google Health.
- Health Connect is a free tool built into Android phones. It lets your health and fitness apps share data with each other in one place. It isn't an account you sign into. Instead, you choose what each app can share using permissions on your phone. (Health Connect is not available on iOS)
Functionality | Google Health (Fitbit) | Health Connect |
What it is | Google's health and fitness app, formerly the Fitbit app | A data-sharing tool built into Android phones (Not compatible with iOS) |
Where you can link it | MyFitnessPal app on iOS and Android, or the website | MyFitnessPal app on Android only (Android 10 or later, MyFitnessPal version 22.22.0 or later) |
Sent from MyFitnessPal | Calories eaten, water, weight, and cardio exercise | Calories eaten, water, and cardio exercise |
Sent to MyFitnessPal | Steps, sleep, weight, and exercise activity which is taken into account for your calorie adjustment. | Steps, sleep, and blood glucose from Dexcom G6 |
Why you can’t link to both at the same time
Health Connect and Google Health can both send the same activity to MyFitnessPal. Google Health can also share data with Health Connect.
If both were linked, the same steps or workouts could reach MyFitnessPal twice. That would make your exercise calories and calorie adjustment look higher than they really are.
To keep your numbers accurate, MyFitnessPal asks you to disconnect Google Health or Samsung Health before you link Health Connect. Pick the one that fits how you track, and you're all set.
